Instructions:

Read all information below in its entirety before proceeding with your renewal.

 Rule §194: Biennial Requirements

A. Unless exempted under §198, licensees shall successfully complete document and report to the board at least 30 hours of board-approved continuing education courses or activities in the biennial renewal period. No carryover of continuing education hours from one renewal period to another shall be allowed. Continuing education will be granted in the reporting period in which the academic coursework, clinical instruction, tool, residency, or fellowship is completed.

B. The types of approved courses or activities and requirement for each are:

(1)   jurisprudence: a minimum of 2 contact hours; 

(2)   ethics or professionalism: a minimum of 2 contact hours;  

(3)   clinical and /or administrative: a minimum of 26 contact hours.

 

  1. Log into your dashboard
  2. Navigate to CEU tab and add courses/verify all requirements are met. Unsure? Check the CEU progress tool below your CEUs. Check that each course entry has the correct completion month/date entered. If not, delete and add again.
  3. Navigate to the Forms tab and enter the Renewal Application.
  4. Complete MDS survey and make note of survey code at the end. Passwords are case sensitive. If you enter your code and receive an error, the application may have timed out. Log out and log in again. Re-enter your code.
  5. Verify that contact information is correct. If not, return to dashboard and update. Click attestations statements and continue. Answer renewal questions and pay. 

 

NOTICE REGARDING LIVE HOURS

 

In 2021, the Board changed the rules to remove the requirement of live hours. This rule change is not temporary. All hours may be done via board-approved online courses if a licensee wishes. You are still required to have 30 board-approved CEU hours. 


IMPORTANT DATES

February 1, 2025
Renewal Period Begins for EVEN-YEAR birth year licensees.
Log in to your account and click “Renew”.

March 31, 2025
Last day of the renewal season for EVEN-YEAR birth year licensees.

April 1, 2025
Late renewal period begins.
Licensees who renew in the month of April will be charged a late fee of an additional $120.

April 30, 2025
License expiration date for EVEN-YEAR birth year licensees.
Renewal applications received after April 30th shall be deemed as applications for license reinstatement pursuant to Rule §187.
Licensees who practice with an expired license are subject to disciplinary action.


FEE SCHEDULE

RENEWAL OF LICENSE, per year  $140

  • Renewal Period opens February 1st and closes March 31st.
  • Licensees who renew in April are charged a late fee (see below for more details).
  • The term for license renewal shall be for two years.

LATE RENEWAL OF LICENSE  $120

  • Late fee is paid in addition to the renewal fee.
  • Licenses may be renewed until April 30th but are charged a penalty if renewed in the month of April.  

Licenses not renewed shall automatically expire at the end of its term, after which the licensee shall not practice in Louisiana. 


EXEMPTIONS FOR NEW GRADUATES AND RECENTLY ISSUED LICENSES

2024 GRADUATE

PTs and PTAs are exempt from CE requirements in the calendar year in which they graduate from an accredited physical therapy education program. If you graduated in 2024 and renew your license in 2025, you do NOT need to report ANY CEU’s for renewal(Rule §198)   

You are still required to renew online.  The system requires a total of 30 Hours for Current Courses to proceed with the online renewal application.

Follow these steps to add the required 30 hours to your Current Course list.
 
 1.  Login
  2.  From your Dashboard, select the “Add a Course” button
  3.  Select the Sponsor, "Louisiana Physical Therapy Board"
  4.  Select the Course Title, "New Graduate 2024"
  5.  Enter the month and year of your graduation for “Award Month/Year”
  6.  Select “Submit”

Follow these steps to add the required 2 hours of Ethics Requirement  to your Current Course list.
 
 1.  Login
  2.  From your Dashboard, select the “Add a Course” button
  3.  Select the Sponsor, "Louisiana Physical Therapy Board"
  4.  Select the Course Title, "New Graduate 2024" Renewing in 2025 – Ethics Course 
  5.  Enter the month and year of your graduation for “Award Month/Year”
  6.  Select “Submit” 


 2023 GRADUATE

PTs and PTAs are exempt from CE requirements in the calendar year in which they graduate from an accredited physical therapy education program. For the second year of the licensee’s renewal period, 15 contact hours must be completed and reported. If you graduated in 2023, and renew your license in 2025, you only need 15 hours of CEUs.  (Rule §198)

2024 Issued RECIPROCITY or REINSTATEMENT Licenses


If you received your license through RECIPROCITY or REINSTATEMENT in 2024 and received a one-year license, you are only required to report 15 hours of CEUs.

       ›  "Licensed through Reciprocity in 2024 (Renewing 2025)"
       ›  "Licensed through Reinstatement in 2024 (Renewing 2025)"
  5.  Enter the month and year that you were licensed for “Award Month/Year”
  6.  Select “Submit”

 

IMPORTANT REMINDER:

Please be advised if you were licensed through reciprocity or reinstatement in 2024 and are due to renew your license in 2025, you cannot submit courses on your renewal application that were used on your application for reinstatement or reciprocity

 


FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

 

  • What course dates can I report during my 2025 renewal period?
  • Licensees who are renewing their license in 2025 can report coursework taken between February 1, 2023 - April 30, 2025. 
  • When can I begin taking CEUs for my 2027 renewal?
    Licensees may begin taking coursework as soon as February 1, 2025 for their 2027 renewal. Licensees may not reuse the same course completion on multiple renewals. "Course completion" is identified by the course certificate with the date completed (ex: January 1, 2024). Licensees may retake a course on a different date to be used in their next renewal period.
  • I took a course that is not board-approved and I'd like to submit it for approval. What is the deadline?
    The deadline to submit an individual course approval appliction is February 28th of your renewal year. 
  • How can I verify that my license was successfully renewed?
    You may verify that the expiration date on your license is 04/30/2027 on the Verify a License tool on our homepage here: www.laptboard.org 
  • I've completed the MDS survey and I have my passcode but I'm having trouble continuing with my renewal. What should I do?
      • Depending on how long it took to complete the MDS survey, the application may have timed out. Log out of your dashboard and log back in again. Try entering your passcode again.
      • For best results, access your renewal on a PC laptop or desktop computer. Avoid using phones or tablets.
      • Use web browsers like Google Chrome or Firefox. Avoid Internet Explorer. 
  • Can you show me how the renewal application works?

 

  • Can I request an exemption to CEU requirements due to personal hardship?
    Yes, the request must be received by the board at least 45 days prior to the end of the renewal period for which the exemption is sought, or immediately after the licensee becomes aware of the facts or circumstances upon which the exemption is sought, whichever is laterSend your request in writing to info@laptboard.org and it will be reviewed at the next board meeting. 
  • My office assistant is assisting me with my renewal. Can they submit for me?
    No. Licensees should be submitting their own renewal applications as the application includes a legal attestation statement. Please also be advised that if licensees have questions regarding their renewal, they should reach out to the board office directly. We want to avoid information being accidentally misconstrued through non-licensees. Staff members are also limited in how much information they can share regarding a licensee to someone who is not that licensee, and this includes family members. The Board office takes licensees' data privacy very seriously.
  • How do I renew my license as inactive if I'm not practicing in Louisiana and have no immediate plans to do so?
    You can review more information on renewing as inactive here.
  • I do not plan to renew my license or I am retiring. What should I do?
    You are not required to do anything. If you are no longer practicing physical therapy in Louisiana you can allow your license to lapse (expire) and there is no penalty. Once your license expires, you will be removed from the Board's email lists and will no longer receive updates.
